Groundhog or VE Day?

Bill Murray's Groundhog day started with the main character reliving the same day over and over if I recall...its a forgettable film so I don't mind if I am completely wrong.

VE day was the celebration day of the end of the second world war's hostilities in Europe. Sadly the confict in Asia would rumble on for longer until the surrender of Japan.

For me, reflecting on December 2021, both potential titles to this blog are relevant. For the second Christmas in a row, we have Covid in our house, so another curtailed Christmas is on the cards. Isolation and feeling miserable are not what we think of as a great Christmas.

But victory in Europe too has a resonance. Due to extensive public health programmes, Covid booster shots have been rolled out extensively across Euopean countries. At time of writing, Omicrom has overtaken Delta as the dominant Corona infection. It appears less virulent and so a milder more transmissable infection may drive us faster towards a herd immunity of sorts.

Adagio had a good year - companies we supported exited in trade sales - Longboat Clinical acquired by Advarra continues to impact on digital execution of clinical trials. Aribamed now Neuraxpharm Ireland brought a European pharmaco of scale to Ireland. Robotify an exciting coding edu software company exited with a decent return multiple for shareholders. HealthBeacon listed on Euronext with an initial public offering raising over $20MM and valuing the company at $95MM.

Adagio has made new strategic investments which remain in stealth mode but which have the hallmarks of great long term bets.

Looking back over the past two years, healthcare has come centre stage in commerce and all aspects of living and the progress of our world. Cop26 has promised a greener future, but the present focus is very much about exiting COVIDIUM - a land of Corono virus and variants which I believe science has now provided us the tools to leave. There are grounds for optimism - more vaccines, a less dangerous Omicrom strain, new drugs reducing hospitalisation and death, a transition towards an endemic respiratory virus much like seasonal flu and the common cold. There is much to be thankful for.

I am optimistic that 2022 will be the year we put Covid in our rear view mirror. Time will tell.
