Digital Hub and Dublin 8

Returning home after extended periods abroad over the past two years, its great to see the renovations taking place along St James Street around the Guiness brewery in Dublin. For people who are not too familiar with this part of the city, a walk along the newly furbished footpaths and a view of a wonderful streetscape emerging are in for a treat. Certainly, if like me you recall this area being quite dillapidated in years gone by, you'll be pleased with what's happening. Dublin City council are doing some excellent work.

Also noteworthy are developments around the Digital Hub. Along with major new investment in proposed student accomodation, the recently refurbished offices and space becoming available make this a must view location for digital and healthcare companies, especially those who wish to leverage opportunities in collaboration from the adjacent St James Hospital site and the wider network envisaged under Trinity Health.

Its great to see the amount of creativity and innovation underway in digital health, medical devices and healthcare services. The team behind the Health innovation Hub in Cork have been doing tremendous work. Stay current at www.hih.ie.

Good news all round from IDA and EI in terms of established companies growing employment and exports.

I've been delighted to watch the progress and increasing success of start-ups such as i360 medical who have built fantastic opportunities with US healthcare providers amongst many - Derek Young CEO, has really developed this business from nothing in a very short space of time and it is already in a great position to be in the vanguard of new medical device technologies.

Louella Morton and Qstream - a technology I really liked and was happy to assist via introduction, is also building a great platform. Simple messaging in healthcare is fundamentally important in what is a human system prone to communication failures.

Jim Joyce from Point of Care continues to find product niches in health which deliver extraordinary benefits. Leonardo Da Vinci said "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". Anyone who has not yet seen Health Beacon (TM) is in for a treat. Closed loop marketing in healthcare is talked about but seldom delivered. Here's a way to really support patients in complying with their therapy and will be immediately adopted I predict by global companies once available.

Jim Joyce, Martin Kelly and Dr Johnnie Walker developed Health XL and Martin has been instrumental in getting serious multinational attention onto Ireland's medical innovation community. They really exemplify the energy and enthusiasm required if you're going to start something meaningful. Martin's made the jump from Big Blue (IBM). I know Health XL already has built an extraordinary following.

Dr Tom O'Callaghan is developing Heedo into a really disruptive platform. Anyone who saw what Tom did with colleagues in the Living Health Clinic in Mitchelstown can see what someone with real vision and leadership can achieve. Accredited health education for professionals more than ever needs to be delivered in high quality and via accessible and affordable channels. I can think of a myriad of areas where such education will really make a difference for patient care and healthcare professional education and training.

Being home just over a month has enabled me consider where Adagiov needs to go. Disruptive thinking more than ever is required.

The real markets are not in Ireland for sales, but its a critical location for development and optimising market offerings. The European and US healthcare markets have fundamentally changed. The big will eat the small, but the swift will eat the slow....time to get your running shoes on. Take a leaf from the books of some of the people I mentioned above - that would make a great start.
